Friday saw Frank Christian come to Fyne Ales to brew his award winning home brew beer Snotty IPA. Frank won this year’s Institute of Brewing and Distilling Home brew Competition. The competition which has run for the last two years brings the best of Scotland’s home brewers together to compete for the prize of getting their beer commercially brewed. Fyne Ales has sponsored the event both years and offered up a commercial brew to this year’s champion.
The beer named Snotty IPA is a 6.3% American styled India Pale Ale with sweet floral and bitter citrus flavours. Our very own Jamie Delap was on the judging panel for this year’s event and picked Snotty IPA as the stand out beer that needed to be brewed and awarded the beer first place in the competition. An awesome result for Frank who has only been home brewing for a few months.
Frank was involved in every part of the process and was put to work by the brewers; digging out the mash and cleaning the copper of all the Cascade and Apollo hops that he stuck in the brew. A generous amount of Galaxy hops will be added during dry hopping when the beer moves to the conditioning tank.
The hoppy IPA will be available in cask during September and also in limited edition 750ml swing top bottles. Illustrator Gavin Dunbar, who designed last year’s Zombier label, will be working to create another unique pump clip and label for Snotty IPA. Keep eyes peeled to Facebook and Twitter later this week for a glimpse at the design.
Like last year’s competition winning beers there will be a launch event held in the Hollyrood 9A bar in Edinburgh, date TBC. This beer is sure to be a belter and won’t hang around for long so get a taste while you can!
