New release: Fyne Ales Farmhouse Project presents: The Merchant

The Merchant returns to the glen with exotic spices, herbs and teas for trade, but saves a bundle of his favourite rooibos for a special purpose. His brew, left for months of maturation during his voyages, is revitalised by the tea, taking on a refreshing, dry, caramel nuttiness to offset its deep, malty flavour.

The third of four beers brewed as part of the Fyne Ales Farmhouse Project, The Merchant will go on sale next week.

Following The Farmer saison and our gruit ale, The Witch; The Merchant is another example of an intriguing beer, featuring uncommon ingredients, and drawing inspiration from the legends of Argyll.

Brewed in early 2015, The Merchant was left to mature into a 5% stock ale for nine months before the addition of African rooibos tea, enhancing the base beer’s autumnal flavours with a rich, dark malty body complimented by the tea’s revitalising flavours.

Available now in limited edition 750ml bottles with stunning artwork once again created by Edinburgh illustrator, GJ Dunbar.

Launch Events

The Merchant will be formally launched on Thursday 13 April, with events taking place in Glasgow and Edinburgh to mark the on sale of the bottles. In Glasgow, Brewdog Glasgow will host a Fyne Ales tap takeover including one of a limited number of kegs of the latest Farmhouse Project beer. They will also host a ticketed, vertical tasting of all Farmhouse Project beers, including an exclusive first tasting of the final beer in the series, The Mystic. Brewer Andrea Ladas, who conceived and developed the beers for the project, will be on hand to talk through the the creation and production of the beers.

In Edinburgh, The Salt Horse bar will tap a keg of The Merchant to coincide with the Glasgow tapping – expect to see the beer on draft from 6pm, and they’ll also have bottle stock to take home at the end of the night.

Bottles will go on sale from the Fyne Ales website, brewery tap and other retailers from the end of the week.

Mills & Hills wins Supreme Champion Gold award at SIBA National Independent Beer Awards

On an outstanding night for Scottish brewing, Fyne Ales imperial stout Mills & Hills was named the UK’s best bottled or canned beer at the 2017 SIBA National Independent Beer Awards.

Mills & Hills, created in collaboration with Dutch brewery De Molen, was a winner of one of the three biggest prizes of the competition held in Sheffield. Fellow Scottish brewery Williams Bros also took a Supreme Champion Gold prize for its cask Williams Black, with other Scottish breweries including Swannay, Strathaven and Alechemy picking up gold prizes in a variety of categories. The Supreme Champion Gold keg beer award went to East Sussex brewery Burning Sky for their Easy Answers IPA.

“I’m delighted that Mills & Hills was won at tonight’s awards ceremony – it was up against some excellent beers. We brewed the original batch of the beer with our friends from De Molen a couple of years ago and it’s amazing that it continues to be recognised,” explained Fyne Ales Managing Director, Jamie Delap.

Mills & Hills is a 9.5% imperial stout. Pouring jet black, the beer carries flavours of rich dark fruits and molasses with a warming finish. It is available in 330ml bottles year-round as well as seasonally in cask and keg. A limited run of barrel-aged Mills & Hills was launched earlier this year.

Fyne Ales’ annual beer, music and food festival, FyneFest was also recognised by SIBA, being shortlisted for a Marketing Implementation award at the annual SIBA Business Awards.

Fyne Ales featured on Expedia map of UK and Ireland’s best breweries

Fyne Ales has been chosen by beer sommelier Melissa Cole to represent Scotland in Expedia.co.uk’s interactive map of best regional breweries.

The map, which also includes information about the breweries and their must-try ales, is aimed at travellers planning weekend breaks. With destinations throughout both the UK and Ireland, it is designed to inspire holidaymakers to get to know the food and drink in the local area where they are staying.

Award-winning author and writer Cole recommended the brewery along with two "must-try" Fyne Ales beers: Jarl and Sublime Stout. Melissa writes “perched at the head of the Glen Fyne, this family brewery has been consistently turning out some of Scotland’s finest beers for 15 years.”

The Fyne Ales brewery tap room, which offers brewery tours in addition to draft and takeaway beer, has become a staple tourist destination since its opening in 2012.

Throughout the year, Expedia will invite food and drink bloggers to develop original recipes inspired by the must-try ales as recommended by Melissa.
