New Brew News – International Women’s Collab Brew Day: Hopulence

Each year on the 8 March, the world celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women with International Women’s Day, while in the beer industry, women are celebrated for their achievements with International Women’s Collab Brew Day (IWCBD).

2017 was the fourth IWCBD, and Fyne Ales first year of participation; we’ve always been proud to have a significant proportion of hard-working, talented women as part of the Fyne Ales team, and even more so that the brewery was co-founded by a woman, Tuggy Delap, in 2001. When the idea to let the ladies of Fyne Ales take over the brewery to create our next Spring cask special was suggested, it was a no-brainer for everyone.

“International Woman's Collab Brew Day is so important as it’s a chance for women to showcase their talents as an ever-growing part of the beer industry,” explained Lynsey Campbell, a member of the Fyne Ales sales team. Office Manager Elaine Polanski said of the brew day "It was a really interesting experience, and an extremely rewarding thing to be part of along with the other ladies of Fyne Ales - I think we taught the guys a thing or two about team work!"

 

Named Hopulence, the Fyne Ales IWCBD beer is characterised by its use of new world hops including Nelson Sauvin and El Dorado during the brew. Both hops are known for their bold tropical fruit flavours, which were then complemented by a dry hopping with Lemon Drop, an experimental hop with strong citrus notes and a green tea, herbal character. “Part of my role at Fyne Ales has enabled me to engage more women in beer; big flavoured, fruity, hoppy IPAs were how I got into craft beer, and I wanted to make a beer that could have the same impact on other women,” explained Campbell, who created the recipe for Hopulence with the brewery team.  Ideal for sunny days in pub gardens, Hopulence is a delightfully refreshing, golden-coloured IPA coming in at a perfectly sessionable 4.5% ABV.

Available to pre-order now and rolling out to pubs from 27 March, keep an eye out for our one-off IWCBD brew in your local pub – the beer will be best super-fresh when the hops are at their most flavourful.

Coming Soon - Fyne Ales X Canediguerra IGA

The Fyne Ales brewery was recently treated to a visit from the team from Italian craft brewery, Canediguerra, who joined us for a long weekend in Argyll to plan a unique, trans-European collaboration brew. Flying in from the North of Italy, the four-man contingent lead by award-winning brewer Alessio Gatti arrived in Achadunan to finalise plans for an Italian-style beer to be brewed in the hills of Scotland.

Like many collaborations, plans for the brew began some months before our guests in Scotland. The Canediguerra guys had advised they had access to an interesting ingredient which has never been used before in a British brew – Italian grape must. A by-product of winemaking, must is a fructose-rich mix of the juice, stalks, stems and skins of grapes. Alessandria, where the Canediguerra brewery is based, has many vineyards producing wines using muscat grapes, known for their sweet, strong fruit flavours. As muscat wines are generally young wines, they can be produced year-round, and a vineyard adjacent to the Italian brewery was happy for Fyne Ales to procure a batch of must for our collaboration brew.

After some logistical hurdles were overcome (tax, duty and a lot of import/export red tape), the must arrived at the brewery in excellent condition, ready to be used to brew an authentic Italian Grape Ale (IGA). Just how the must was used and the final beer recipe we’ll cover in a later blog, so stay tuned for part two where we’ll properly introduce the beer and talk a bit more about the research, devising and brewing processes behind it.

Right now the beer is being prepared for bottling and we’re confident that the first leg of the collaboration has produced something special. New Brew News - March 2017

The start of 2017 has been busy at the Fyne Ales brewery, not only with planning exciting things for the year ahead (looking at you, FyneFest), but with producing some exciting new beers. Below are the details of some limited and seasonal release cask and keg beers you might stumble across in your local in the near future.

Orange Apeel

ABV 4.4%

A cask-exclusive session IPA brewed with whole oranges alongside Cascade and Summit hops for a big, citrus taste that gives way to a clean, bitter finish. With a recipe developed and brewed by Erasmus project participant Simone Appodia, this light, easy-drinking, golden ale is a well-balanced refresher.

Three of Clubs

Fyne Ales & Toccalomatto & Casita Cerveceria

ABV 8.8%

An ambitious three-legged collaboration with friends of the brewery, Toccalomatto and Casita Cerveceria, Three of Clubs is a heavily hopped Belgian tripel brewed using the same recipe in three separate locations (USA, Scotland and Italy). Named in honour of one of the three brewers’ favourite pastimes, the beer is a great example of a modern twist on the traditional Belgian style with golden colour profile, bold sweetness at the forefront balanced against a dry, hoppy finish.

Wee Heavy

ABV 6.1%

A limited release, cask exclusive, dark scotch ale. While the majority of the brew has been reserved for an exciting future project, the beer’s warming, rich flavour profile means it’s ideal for the early Spring months and we’ve made a limited number of casks available right now. With a soft chocolatey smoothness and a touch of British and American hops running alongside the caramel finish, Fyne Ales’ Wee Heavy is an excellent example of the traditional higher-ABV Scottish style ale.

Guava Sour

ABV 5%

At the other end of the scale, Guava Sour is a modern take on a full-bodied Berliner Weisse style, with an amped-up ABV and big tropical fruit kick thanks to the addition of over 22kg of fresh guava during fermentation. Available in keg now, Guava Sour is a light, sparkling kettle-sour with strong flavours of lemon and tropical fruit and a refreshing finish.

Razuberi!

ABV 4%

Another limited release coming soon, Razuberi! is a session wheat beer with a ridiculous amount of fresh raspberries added to give it a fresh, red-fruit kick. Razuberi!, the Japanese for raspberry, has been brewed as part of a partnership with Japan’s Craft Beer Market where it is known under the less exciting name CBM #4, but limited kegs are hitting UK bars from next week.
