The Merchant returns to the glen with exotic spices, herbs and teas for trade, but saves a bundle of his favourite rooibos for a special purpose. His brew, left for months of maturation during his voyages, is revitalised by the tea, taking on a refreshing, dry, caramel nuttiness to offset its deep, malty flavour.
The third of four beers brewed as part of the Fyne Ales Farmhouse Project, The Merchant will go on sale next week.
Following The Farmer saison and our gruit ale, The Witch; The Merchant is another example of an intriguing beer, featuring uncommon ingredients, and drawing inspiration from the legends of Argyll.
Brewed in early 2015, The Merchant was left to mature into a 5% stock ale for nine months before the addition of African rooibos tea, enhancing the base beer’s autumnal flavours with a rich, dark malty body complimented by the tea’s revitalising flavours.
Available now in limited edition 750ml bottles with stunning artwork once again created by Edinburgh illustrator, GJ Dunbar.
The Merchant will be formally launched on Thursday 13 April, with events taking place in Glasgow and Edinburgh to mark the on sale of the bottles. In Glasgow, Brewdog Glasgow will host a Fyne Ales tap takeover including one of a limited number of kegs of the latest Farmhouse Project beer. They will also host a ticketed, vertical tasting of all Farmhouse Project beers, including an exclusive first tasting of the final beer in the series, The Mystic. Brewer Andrea Ladas, who conceived and developed the beers for the project, will be on hand to talk through the the creation and production of the beers.
In Edinburgh, The Salt Horse bar will tap a keg of The Merchant to coincide with the Glasgow tapping – expect to see the beer on draft from 6pm, and they’ll also have bottle stock to take home at the end of the night.
Bottles will go on sale from the Fyne Ales website, brewery tap and other retailers from the end of the week.
