Jarl Appreciation Night at the Brewery Tap

2013 was a very big year for Jarl, named Champion Beer of Scotland and Champion Golden Ale of Britain. We thought we would take a night to toast to our champion beer and pair it with some excellent local food.

On Friday 7th of March we are hosting a three course meal that has been designed to complement the bold citrusy flavours of Jarl in our Brewery Tap.

To start our friends at Loch Fyne Oysters will brining over fresh local oysters. They will be preparing the oysters in the bar and serving them with all the usual condiments.

For main course we will be serving a creamy fish pie made locally and for desert there will be homemade lemon torte.

All of this great food will of course be served with a pint of Jarl.

Tickets for this night are £17.50 and include the 3 course meal and 2 half pints of Jarl.

There are 25 places available for this night at our brewery and tickets must be booked in advance.

New Brewery Expansion Has Begun!

Today is a very big day for Fyne Ales as we can announce that construction of our new brewery expansion has begun. With an investment of £2 million this is a big step for Fyne Ales which will help us to take the quality of our beer to next level.

This project has been a long time in the planning, well over a year, and is the result of many hours of hard work and meticulous planning and research. We could have built an expansion a long time ago that would let us produce more beer with a lower investment; however we wanted to make sure that a new brewery would not only add more capacity but improve the quality and flavour of the beer we produce. This expansion will allow us to get more Fyne Ales to new areas of the UK and beyond.

We currently produce 90 barrels of beer per week – the equivalent of 27,000 pints. The first expansion phase will see production increase to 180 barrels a week with space available to boost production to 120 barrels per day – the equivalent of 36,000 pints - in 5 years’ time. 

We have decided to stay true to our heritage and to go with a British manufactured brew house, using traditional British ale technology rather than continental technology, which we believe will be best for our beer. With the addition of key bits of kit like a hopback and a malt mill, we will be able to extract brighter and fresher flavours from our ingredients. The new brew system will be one of the most advanced craft brew houses in the country but will remain semi-automated. This will allow our brewers to always remain in control while becoming more precise and accurate in the production process.

The new brewery is being built in an old sheep shed which is located right next to our current brewery on the same farm. Our existing brew kit will still be used and with all the new space it means we will have lots more time to brew exciting new beers in cask, bottle and keg, so watch this space.

As the construction progresses we will keep you updated on some of the key bits of kit and what they will mean for the beer we make.

We will always remain dedicated to brewing outstanding craft beer and are very excited about what the future holds.

Brewer's Fuel

For a long time there has been one beer in particular that we have had our eye on brewing, a cold pressed coffee stout. As we had to produce a flavoured stout with our Battle of the Brewers with Stewart Brewing, an event which raised over £1000 for charity, it gave us the perfect chance to try this one out.

Plenty of coffee gets drunk in the brewery but we are by no means experts on the finer details of these roasted little beans, so we decided to recruit some help. Local coffee expert Alastair, also known as The Coffee Guy and founder of The Home Ground Coffee Company, was brought in to help us get the right coffee for the beer we wanted. Alastair specialises in roasting his own blends of the finest responsibly sourced coffee beans from around the world. You may have sampled some of Alastair’s special blends at Fyne Fest in the past.

Our brewing team and Alastair got to work on creating a recipe and worked up something special for the beer. The brewers decided they wanted something with a good bit of body so added plenty of oat malt to the recipe. A bit of rye was added to give the beer a little spice on the palate and plenty of chocolate malt was added for a smooth aroma and flavour.

Alastair developed a recipe using five different beans: El Limon (Nicaragua), Finca Bosca Lya (El Salvador),  Fanzenda Pantano (Brazil), Finca Muxbal (Mexico ) and Yirgacheffe Aricha (Ethiopia).All of these beans were sourced form ethical sources where the growers receive the proper value for their produce.

To add the coffee flavour to the beer a cold brew was made, this reduced the level of acidy in the coffee allowing for the fruity and chocolate notes of the beans to shine through. The cold brew of coffee was added to the kettle and boiled with the hops. We also decided we wanted to give the beer a strong coffee punch so we added another cold infusion of coffee to each cask of beer.

We really love this beer and it has gotten our creative juices going, look out for more collaborations with The Coffee Guy in the future.
