July’s Mini-Cask Club’s beer is here – introducing New Age, a next generation pale ale brewed in collaboration with Natural Selection Brewing!

Natural Selection is an annual project that’s part of the MSc Brewing & Distilling course at Heriot-Watt University. Each year a small team of students are tasked with designing, brewing, marketing and selling their own beer to pubs around the UK to give them a comprehensive understanding of the working of a commercial brewery.

In previous years, Fyne Ales has proudly showcased Natural Selection’s annual brew on the bar at FyneFest, but when we weren’t able to do so for 2022 we opted for something even more exciting and invited them to join us in the glen for collab brew!

“As a Herriot Watt graduate myself, I’m excited to support the Natural Selection project students and next generation of UK brewers with this collab,” shares Head Brewer, Malcolm Downie. “It’s going to be great to have so much youthful enthusiasm around the brewery on the brew day!”

Working with the New Age team, a concept for our collaboration came together quickly. It’s no secret that UK hop-growing has been going through a resurgence in recent years an we’ve really enjoyed brewing recent specials with some of the new wave of crops. With our student friends keen to experience some of the new UK hop varieties themselves the idea for a pale ale celebrating the next generation of UK hops and brewing talent came together beautifully.

“For our exciting collaboration with Fyne Ales we knew we wanted to create a UK inspired beer to stick with the beer we made for the latest edition of Natural Selection Brewing. We chose Mystic, Emperor, and Olicana hops which are all grown within the UK,” shares Natural Selection head brewer, Rita Behles. “Members of our team recently visited Fyne Ales at Fyne Fest, so we couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with them – we don’t have a lot of experience making cask ales, so who better to learn from than Fyne Ales!”

New Age is a 4.5% bright, British-hopped pale with Emporer, Mystic and Olicana hops – a trio which come together to offer a full gamut of flavours, with tropical, citrus and grassy flavours.

This month, five litres of New Age will be combined with five litres of our year-round fruity blonde – Hurricane Jack, in addition to:
