Citizens of Everywhere: Beer/Life Balance
Back at the end of 2018, we were approached by our good friends at Moor Beer about joining an ambitious new brewing project designed to highlight and celebrates the achievements resulting from UK and EU collaboration – the Citizens of Everywhere project.
The project pairs twelve UK breweries with twelve breweries that call Europe their home, with each brewing duo given a ‘theme’ based on a UK/EU achievement and instructions to brew a brand new beer using only European ingredients.
We jumped at the chance to get involved.
Our brewery seen and felt a huge amount of benefit from being part of the EU in the last 17 years – from being inspired by and collaborating with talented brewers around Europe, to sharing our beers with enthusiastic drinkers across the continent via festivals, events and export. Our relationship with the EU has given us plenty of reasons to celebrate, and joining the project felt like an appropriate way to mark that.
We were teamed up with Sweden’s Beerbliotek, a brewery who we have admired for a long time, and given the theme of the ‘protection of workers’ rights’ – a nice, if slightly challenging, starting point for designing a beer recipe. Through some rapid-fire emails, we landed on a grisette – a light saison historically brewed for mine workers – brewed using a mix of European noble hops and lifted with a dash of lemon and orange to give an uplifting, citrussy edge to the rounded, estery, and subtly peppery base beer.
Beer/Life Balance, as the collab came to be known when the Beerbliotek team came to brew in the glen, is our third ever canned beer, with custom artwork showcasing a rustic, textured version of the Swedish brewery’s logo alongside our classic brand block.
Cans will be available alongside the project’s eleven other beers in a mixed case from Beer52, as well as from the Fyne Ales online shop from this Friday, 22 March 2019. The beers will also be launching on draught at a series of events around the UK – check out the full list over on the Citizens of Everywhere website.
