Welcome to the Fyne Ales blog—here you’ll find the latest insight into what’s going on with the Fyne Ales team in the brewery, on the farm or on the road.

New Skies – TOAST Companion Series 2021

Today we’re excited to reveal an important new beer – New Skies – one of 26 beers created by 25 breweries using surplus bread as part of Toast Ales’ Companion Series, with the goal of highlighting the role of food waste in the climate emergency ahead of the COP26 conference next month.

Additionally, this limited-edition collection of beers will raise £65,000 for conservation and regenerative agriculture organisations, protecting 3.25 million trees in threatened tropical rainforests, and sequestering 360 tCO2 in agricultural soils.

Other breweries among the 25 taking part in the project include Five Points, Northern Monk, Signature, Adnams, Wild Card, and Unity – all of whom have come together to call upon world leaders to use their time in Glasgow to agree and commit to robust and wide-ranging targets and actions to halt further climate change.

“From day one, our farm brewery set out to not just protect our local environment, but worked to find ways to enhance it. Our corner of rural Scotland isn’t just home to our brewery – our herds of red deer and highland cattle are fed on spent grain from the brewing process, and we have a long track-record of sustainability initiatives we’ve undertaken to ensure our Glen Fyne home thrives for years to come,” shares Fyne Ales MD, Jamie Delap, on joining Toast Ale’s initiative. “We believe we all have a role to play in protecting our planet for future generations, so the opportunity to join TOAST’s project and learn more about using food waste to further reduce our impact on the wider environment and highlight the role of food waste in climate change was too good to miss, especially with COP26 taking place down the road in Glasgow this year.”

Our contribution to the Companion Series is a 5% new world pale ale brewed using Summit, Meridian, Mosaic and Kolibri hops, as well as the breadcrumbs from surplus bread. It’s lightly hazy, with a soft tropical fruit flavour profile; New Skies is an easy-drinking juicy pale ale that we’re incredibly proud to be including in the Companion Series line-up.

“We love brewing new recipes and working with new ingredients, but I’d be lying if I said we weren’t a little apprehensive about using the breadcrumb in the New Skies brew – it’s just something we’d never considered using before and we had all these crazy ideas about stuck mashes and crazy off-flavours,” shares Head Brewer, Malcolm Downie. “Of course, everything turned out great and New Skies is tasting brilliant – we’ll definitely be looking at ways to incorporate crumb in some future brews!”
