Introducing Elegy, our biggest and boldest Origins Brewing beer ever.

Created in collaboration with Florida’s Cigar City Brewing, Elegy is an 11.5% imperial dark ale aged in Hazelburn single-malt whisky barrels for over a year. The beer takes inspiration from whisky tablet, an inherently Scottish fudge-like treat that offers sweet, creamy vanilla flavours with an undertone of smooth highland single-malt.

Elegy is available now in 375ml bottles from the Fyne Ales Online Shop.

Double-mashed and featuring a combination of nine malts, Elegy is a big beer, layered with smooth caramel, chocolate and vanilla notes that fade into a distinctive yet gentle honeyed whisky finish that warms and lingers.

It was in September 2018 that the journey of Elegy began, with a flying visit from Cigar City Brewmaster Wayne Wambles joining us in Glen Fyne. We took the opportunity to brew in both our original and new breweries – creating a floral IPA (Remote Parts) on the big kit, and something much more sinister in the old dairy.

“Brewing with Wayne is a brilliant experience – his incredible brewing knowledge, accumulated over decades in the industry and his meticulous approach to recipe development meant we knew Elegy was going to be good, even before we’d actually mashed in” shares Fyne Ales Head Brewer Malcolm Downie. “ We worked together to get every detail in place for the brew before the big day, including choosing Hazelburn barrels for finishing the beer.”

Hazelburn is produced by Springbank Distillery, our long-time partner when it comes to bringing together the worlds beer and whisky. We selected freshly-emptied Hazelburn barrels for Elegy’s long rest due to its delicate nature – we didn’t want an aggressive or smoky whisky that could potentially clash or overpower the base beer’s carefully crafted flavours. Hazelburn’s smooth honeyed fruit and creamy caramel finish with the lightest hint of oak complements Elegy’s base flavours beautiful, the combination offering a real taste of Scotland.

“It was an honor to brew for the first time at a true Scottish Farmhouse brewery, wrestling with the malt and finessing the hops,” added Wayne. “We whispered gently to the yeast that evening over pints and waited for the whiskey barrels to bring our vision to fruition many months later.”

As those who got to try Elegy during the preview at Cloudwater’s Friends & Family & Beer in February can attest, Elegy is a special beer and we’re hugely proud of it – we hope you enjoy it.
