Mini-Cask Club – March 2021: Midnight Loch – Members’ Choice!

Introducing Midnight Loch – our March Mini-Cask Club Discovery brew and the winner of the very first MCC members’ choice poll!

Back in January we asked our MCC members what style of IPA they wanted to enjoy as their March Discovery beer with a choice between an East Coast juicy IPA, smooth and hoppy red IPA and a paradoxical black IPA and much to our surprise – the #BIPAComeback movement edged it and Midnight Loch is a 5% black IPA!

Black IPAs combine a clean, roasty malt base with zippy citrus and resinous hop flavour for a slightly confusingly-light and refreshing take on the India pale ale. Peaking in popularity in the early 2010s, the style has fallen out of fashion in recent years, until now!

“Black IPAs are really fun and can be an outstanding drink, if you get balance right between that dark, dry and roasty malt base and the perfect mix of hops” explains Head Brewer Malcolm Downie. “We had Sanda Black as one of our year-round beers until 2015, and we’ve had more and more folk asking when it’ll be back or when we’ll be brewing another black IPA – it seems the time has come.”

American Calypso hops take centre-stage in the recipe for Midnight Loch – it’s a hop with a complex flavour profile that will stand up nicely to the dark-malt base of the black IPA. With plenty of zesty citrus character, it also offers a dash of orchard fruit and a tea-like depth. It’s backed up by a supporting cast of tropical Belma, earthy Mittlefruh, and piney Bravo for a fully rounded flavour profile.

Midnight Loch, whose name was suggested by Mini-Cask Club member Peter Burstow, will be sent to Mini-Cask Club Discovery members first in the first week of March, with remaining mini-casks available from the online shop for £24.50 later.
