Next month’s MCC discovery brew is a super-fun 4.5% German pale ale, with a recipe designed by our Technical Brewer, Yvonne Wernlein, as a celebration of the hops from her homeland!

This bright and crisp pale ale brings together the delicious floral character of classic German hop varieties with a kick from a delicately used fruity modern breeds – alongside the botanical and beautifully gentle Mittelfruh and Tettnanger, we’re bringing a little bit of citrus and tropical zip to the flavour party with Callista and Mandarina Bavaria in the mix.

“We’ve been using a lot of UK hops in our beers this year, so I thought it was about time for the German varieties to get some love,” shares Yvonne. “With the four hops we’ve chosen for Sonder, I think drinkers will get a real taste of what German hop-growing has to offer, with both the old-world and new world crops contributing to a very tasty, balanced pale ale.”

The German word Sonder translates simply to ‘special’ in English, but it has also recently taken on a secondary usage in our native tongue – used to describe the understanding of the vastness of humanity, and that each person has their own story to write and tell. As beer is design to bring people together to share experiences and tell stories, we loved the idea of naming our latest German-inspired ale after such an inspiring concept.

This month, five litres of Sonder will be combined with five litres of our Champion Premium Pale Ale of Scotland, Avalanche,  in addition to:
